Hello, my name is Eric, I would like to chat a little about web hosts and name servers. When choosing a web host there are some very important facts you need to research about a company. Firstly you would need to check bandwidth, so if you have a high traffic site, or ever expect to, your server can handle it (without exorbident fees for going over), and storage space, (300 to 800mb is general for good hosts. Secondly is up-time of said "server", and this does vary no matter what they advertise it to be! In this realm, a free server is not the way to go. 99.0% to 99.5% is fairly accurate for many paid servers. Host4profit or HostGator are 2 good ones. Thirdly, you do not have to purchase your domain name from your host, there are many places to get a domain name cheaper than most servers charge, then all you do is point your name through your name servers site, to your host site. This may take a bit, 24 to 72 hours, so try to get a name before you get a server, it helps speed this up a little. DomainOrb or GoDaddy come very highly recommended. Forthly, you will definitely need to check out the features very closely,(price is not everything), check e-mail and accessability to itand how many accounts you can have, mail manager, so you can redirect mail and e-mail aliases. Then check for an easily navigated C-panel, some don't have this. Check sub-domains and cost for them, URL redirects are handy too. An FTP module and MySQL database, Perl and php4 handling ability, htaccess folder(very handy), A real cgi-bin (a must have), a search engine submitter and can they run cron events. Of course look for great online prompt support and multiple domain discounts. A strong network and backbone is mandatory for flawless operation. Not all have this, so don't get yourself stuck when it comes to what I've mentioned. Another great thing is if they pay referal commissions to you, a nice little plus.
